It Happened

Over the years I have been involved with Nishikigoi I have had some truly amazing ‘experiences’ along the way. Some were very funny; some very sad; some unique people; some crazy people; some crooked people; some good and bad ideas; some good and bad advice; some disasters; some superstitions; some inexplicable situations and the list goes on as memories still seem to pop up out of my head even daily when least expected.

This page will be added to when new recollections surface so it will be an on-going record. Rather than list them in no order at all, I have attempted to compartmentalise them in some way to make things a little easier for the reader. One thing is certain, they all revolved around Koi and……………………they all actually happened



Koi

Several years ago, I saw a three year Koi at Maruju – it was the most beautiful Shiro Utsuri I can ever recall, trouble was, it had a perfect red kuchibeni lip which made her a Showa. She could not be entered in Utsurimono class and, as a Showa she was useless. I was only part of the queue waiting to buy her and she was sold before I got the chance – for a substantial amount!

The Sayings & The Snippets

Never walk around a Koi pond in high heels, the resulting ‘shockwaves’ can kill’ – I have heard this said often in the early days and, whilst I have never felt the urge to do this myself, I have often used pneumatic hammers to break up concrete very close to Koi ponds with no adverse effects. However, I must admit – I do love high heels - especially on ladies.

Events

For several years, I used to breed some of my larger Koi after preparing the spawning ponds with purpose-made, soft spawning nets and lengths of artificial spawning grass (Kinran), imported from Japan. We also sold these items to those who wished to have a go in spawning their own Koi.
